Ragnar Tornquist is stepping a bit away from the baby he fathered, The Secret World. Not too far away as he’ll still be overseeing the game, but away. He’s recently founded a new studio called Red Thread Games, while still keeping his fingers in the TSW pie. Funcom has back burnered Dreamfall too long it would seem, with its emphasis on online gaming. They have entered into a revenue sharing agreement as part of the licensing deal.
What is his new baby? The sequel to the award winning adventure “Dreamfall: The Longest Journey”. Tornquist is now putting his efforts into continuing the series. He’s received a grant from the Norwegian Film institute to get him started in preproduction.
So what will this sequel be? Dreamfall Chapters, an offline PC and MAC single player adventure game. I must admit I was a bit relieved to hear it will not be competing directly with TSW as an MMO. I’ve not played the first game, but this has piqued my interest as….there is no combat. None.
Tornquist has said that this will be a rather large game with a lot of playtime and it will be well polished when it finally comes to term. The game theme will be chapters of life, traveling from birth through death itself. He stresses the fact that it will be chapters and not episodes in fact.
In this game you’ll have your mind challenged by puzzles as the story unfolds, and the nice thing is that while you try to wrap your mind around the puzzles and/or research them…you’re not running against a timer, you won’t die. In fact, his aim is to have people clustered around a single computer, working together to try and solve the puzzles, or simply watch the story progress.
The game will include WASD key movement in a 3D world with its focus on exploration and solving puzzles, and discoveries. We look forward to hearing more, as the story of making Dreamfall Chapters unfolds. Tornquist is looking to eventually market the game on such platforms as GoGcom and Steam.
We here at Holosuite Media wish Ragnar Tornquist the best of luck with his new endeavour!
