Multiverse of Games Theory

By the nature of the game, I’ve found elements of TSW leaking into my other aspects of my life. No, I don’t mean that it’s made me meticulously check the cracks in my bathroom at 4 AM for fear that some otherworldly terror is trying to break into our mortal realm (I did that long before I ever heard of TSW). I’m talking about other video games! If we accept that The Secret World has some trans-dimensional aspects, then there are limitless implications of the Cabals and the Filth influencing other worlds. So pull up a chair and let’s share some fan theories that totally work in the context of a bunch of nerds putting purpose to lazy story tropes!

Warning- here there be spoilers. Both for The Secret World, and if all goes well, a bunch of other games too.

Fallout Franchise- In the midst of a nuclear powered golden age, the American government discovers the Filth and sets up (with Illuminati influence, of course) the Enclave to study paranatural events. They eventually refine it to a containable green sludge they call the “Forced Evolutionary Virus” with the hope that it can be used to create a race of supersoldiers, or even weaponized directly. Unfortunately, their meddling with Filth deposits unleashes all manner of supernatural beasties, which governments combat under the cover of fabricated “Resource Wars”. Eventually, the rifts between reality grow too great to contain and the Chinese government (perhaps influenced by Dragon provocation) sets off thermonuclear war to stop the mounting infection. Years later, the scant survivors emerge to rebuild in the wasteland. Remnants of the Filth-derived FEV continue to plague humanity, but without enough people left to create a global “Dreamworld”, the true threat remains locked away.

Prototype Franchise- Blacklight, a government organization devoted to combating highly infectious diseases, discovers the Filth. They try to contain it and fail horribly. Then the events of Prototype happen. Basically, it’s our “The Secret World”, but the societies suck at their job.

Far Cry 3- Okay, stay with me here. The Rook Islands are over a small Filth leak that has slowly been driving the inhabitants crazy over generations. The local wild life is unnaturally aggressive, the local hallucinogenic mushrooms are cranked up to eleven, and the local pirate forces are inexplicably well organized. The most exposed single individual is the iconic Vas, who has absorbed so much Filth that his mind is beginning to drift across space and time, much like John’s, giving him wide pop culture knowledge and a strange outside perspective on the madness consuming everyone on the islands, including himself. All this begins to change when Brody and his friends arrive and the Filth sees and opportunity to spread to the most affluent tiers of Western society through their idiot kids. As the game goes on, the Dreamers slowly tilt their influence toward Brody, turning him into a vicious killer. His showdown with Vas becomes the ultimate tipping point where the pirate leader willingly relinquishes the Filth’s influence and Brody becomes the new, unknowing carrier of the Dreamers’ omnicidal wishes.

What is that, three games to get the ball rolling? Yeah, that seems like a good starting number. Come on, add some fuel to this fire! I’m sure you’ve got some ideas out there- let’s hear ’em!
