[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness.
No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful.
Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that hasThe name of Reading Rainbow, a television series that promotes reading by children, has been a synonym for children’s literacy since June 6, 1983. They aired more than 200 episodes and won numerous awards. The concept of this reading series for children originated with Twila Liggett, Ph.D., Paul Schupbach and Tony Buttino. The original team included Lynne Brenner Ganek, Ellen Schecter, and host LeVar Burton. The series was cancelled in November of 2006 amid PBS’ financial troubles.
In 2011, renowned actor, producer and lifelong education advocate LeVar Burton, formed RRKidz with his business partner Mark Wolfe. They now hold the global rights to the Reading Rainbow brand through a partnership with series creator, WNED/Buffalo. In 2012, they released the Reading Rainbow App for the iPad and, within 36 hours, it became the #1 most-downloaded educational app in the iTunes App Store.
Now, LeVar Burton has asked the public to join Reading Rainbow’s Kickstarter campaign to bring unlimited books and video field trips to all children. They have asked the public to help them fund a web-based reading program that will be available in every classroom, will have teacher’s guides and perhaps most importantly, will be available for free to any disadvantaged classroom. The campaign’s initial $1 million goal will fund:
1. A web-based version of Reading Rainbow for universal access
2. An Educator-specific version with the tools teachers need
3. FREE access to the service for a minimum of 1500 classrooms
The response to their campaign so far has been nothing short of amazing. In just under 2 days, they have not only met their $1 million dollar goal, but have, at the time of writing this article, more than doubled it. New stretch goals will be added to their Kickstarter in the next couple of days.
The rewards for backing this extremely worthwhile cause are truly amazing. They range from simple “Thank you” letters to private dinners and meet and greets with LeVar Burton at various locations across the USA and Canada. They, of course, also include many Star Trek based rewards.
Funding period for this Kickstarter project ends on July 2nd 2014, so there’s still plenty of time for you to make your pledge.
no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?
On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″]
