The spectacular marine world of the Maldives is the setting for a futuristic-looking luxury hotel that is set to be built off the island of Kuredhivaru, where the ambitious part underwater project will be built amidst delicate coral reefs in crystal clear waters.
Deep Ocean Technology, a Polish architectural and deep-sea engineering company who designed the Water Discus Hotel and is backed by Swiss investors on this project, received the green light last week by the ministry of tourism in the Maldives to go ahead with plans to build the leviathan hotel in their waters. The hotel will be built for the Ridgewood Hotels and Suites Pvt. Ltd.
Its futuristic design is made up of spaceship-like discs reminiscent of Star Trek’s Enterprise. The company describes the hotel as
“Star Trek meets the undersea world of Jacques Cousteau.”
The hotel is set to partially be built under water, with its underwater disc set up to 30 meters below the surface of the sea. It will house 21 soundproof guest rooms and the hotel bar as well as a submarine, air-locked dive center that leads divers straight into the ocean.
Guests will be able to enjoy the view of the reefs from their rooms. For deep-sea divers, the dive center also includes a decompression chamber.
The upper deck is about 7 meters above the water. It will house the hotel restaurant, a spa, a rooftop seawater pool and a tropical garden, as well as a helicopter landing pad. The hotel will even move like a spaceship, able to slide to the surface in case of an emergency.
Designers of the luxury hotel plan to minimize the environmental cost of the hotel construction by building it on flat sand and planting coral around the hotel rooms. They plan to grow the eco-systems in a special plantation before relocating them around the hotel.
Maldives, with its spectacular coral reefs and crystal blue water, provide a setting for many luxury underwater restaurants and hotels. Set five meters below the surface of the sea, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island hotel also features 180-degree views of the coral gardens. This 12-seat restaurant can be converted into a private bedroom suite for two, along with champagne, dinner and breakfast all while in bed.
