#IAMTSW – Zvahn
A back-/introduction story for a friend’s character, Lily “Eilidhe” Sparrow. The writing is my own.

The glass door to Kirsten Geary’s office closed silently after the pair passed through, prompting her to look up from her laptop with the briefest look of irritation before immediately brightening with a smile. In Vinar’s experience, that sort of look meant something dangerous was in store. Geary never smiled so quickly as when she saw the two of them–and presumably other agents, as he had no illusion that they were particularly special to her–as solutions to an annoying problem.
Her first words very nearly confirmed it. “You two! Just who I wanted to see,” she said as she swiped at her screen, causing it to display on the wall behind her. As she stood, he took a moment to look over what was there — it looked to be a personnel file, and not one belonging to either of them. “Great job on that last mission. Absolutely stellar — gold star and high-fives.” Her hand did not raise, and nor did theirs. “Tell me: how are you liking your arrangements? You two seem to have grown quite close — even beyond the regular increases in heart-rate we’ve seen when you’re alone.”
A glance passed between the pair, and Vinar spoke first. “We work well together.” Short and to the point, but Kai echoed his sentiment, which received a waved hand from Geary. Their answers weren’t important; she had just been polite enough to let them speak.
Turning to the display behind her, the Illuminati Handler brought the file into greater detail. “Well, we’re going to expand your duet. Three’s company, and all.” Statistical data and biographic information sprawled the wall, though she gave them little time to read over any of it. “Her name’s Lily. Found her way here just yesterday. The girl was overflowing with anima, breathing life into everything in sight; Zurn actually lost a few wrinkles! Hardly any control over it, but she should become a real beast in time.
“Now, I know. You’re wondering: ‘Why us, Kirsten? Why not a solo operative?'” To this, she gave them no opportunity to respond with even a shake or nod of a head. “For two reasons, my dear bee-powered killers. One: You two die way too much. I mean, really — I know you’ve got the Unlimited Lives cheat on, but it’s embarrassing, okay? A real healer might make you look more like Agents and less like a couple of sword-swinging zombies.”
She paused, allowing them a moment to take that in. Both knew better than to argue with her on that; it would only lead to worse. When she realized no argument was coming, Geary continued. “Second: She’s blind, so there won’t be an extra set of eyes on your backs. It seems she may be able to see, in a way — the reports mention something odd about her psychological makeup. Worst case, you’ll be slowed down but live longer. Best case, she becomes a sort of oracle. They are usually blind, after all. Think about it: you could be taking care of the next Melissonomoi!”
When neither agent did more than stare at her, Geary rolled her eyes. “Seriously? I was joking, but neither of you know the name?” Her hand waved in abrupt dismissal, directing them toward the door. “Go Google it. Your new partner is down in the Test Chamber — we’ll be in touch.”

Deeper in the Labyrinth, Lily sat stock-still, thin fingers flexing against her knees as another explosion rocked the thick wall behind her. It sounded like a war was unfolding around her, and she had to remind herself repeatedly that the shouts filling the air were just people training in this underground bunker she had been directed to. No longer receiving visual input, her mind had taken to conjuring images that were surely wilder than anything reality could manage.
Of course, the reality of her surroundings was more fantastic than anything she could have dreamt up before. Shadow societies, magic powers, dark days and immortality. If not for the too-sweet surge of life that had been coursing through her for the past week, and the soft hum of scarring truths which accompanied it, Lily would never have believed any of it.
But it was real. It had to be. The only other explanation was insanity, and she couldn’t be insane.
Could she?
