Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us biggest winners of Golden Joysticks awards 2013

The Golden Joystick Awards are the oldest and most prestigious awards in gaming history. They are voted for exclusively by the public who this year broke another record with 10 million votes cast during the voting period. This year’s nomination window included games released between August 25th 2012 and September 2013, nominated across a total of 15 categories. The ceremony took place in London this last Friday.

Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us proved to be the biggest winners of the night as Golden Joystick awards for 2013 concluded. Very deserving, as Grand Theft Auto V on its first day achieved worldwide retail sales of $800 million, with global sales topping $1 billion after just three days.

For the first time in its 31 year history, the Golden Joystick Awards honored an individual for their lifetime’s work. BioShock Creative Director and Co-Founder of Irrational Games, Ken Levine received a special Lifetime Achievement award. Levine led the creation of Bioshock, the highest-rated first-person-shooter of all time, the masterpiece that helped spark the ‘games as art’ debate.
