We are greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Clifford John Bole, who has died peacefully at his home in Palm Desert, CA, on the morning of February 15 at the age of 76.
Bole was a director of many American and Canadian television programs such as Charlie’s Angels, V: The Series, MacGyver, Baywatch and The X-Files. He is perhaps best known for his directing work on Star Trek franchise which began with the first season episode “Lonely Among Us” of Star Trek: The Next Generation. He went on to direct a further 24 episodes of that series, as well as seven episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and ten episodes of Star Trek: Voyager.
Bole directed the TNG episode “Conspiracy”, which featured the first appearance of the alien race called the Bolians, who were named after him. The Cliffs of Bole, mentioned in “Invasive Procedures” are a further play on his name. In his interview with StarTrek.com in January of 2012, Bole stated:
“When (the Bolians) first happened I thought someone was pulling my leg, maybe (Rick) Berman or someone else. Then it became an item. I was proud of it. To hear your name constructed into the name of an alien race, I thought it was great — and I still do. It comes up all the time. People ask me about it all the time. I’m amazed that people still follow the show enough to ask about it.”
Holosuite Media and its staff wish to express our sincere condolences on their loss to Bole’s family: his wife Brenda, his daughter Stacey, his son Curtis and two grandsons, Connor and Cole. In accordance with his wishes, Bole’s ashes will be scattered at sea. The family suggests that friends wishing to honor his memory contribute to a cancer research organization of their choice or visit his star in Palm Springs. A celebration of life will be held later in the year.
