======================================
The young German archeology student looked over their collected items over and over again. Something was off, as if they were missing something.
Then the beeping notification of an incoming mail mixed into the constant drumming of sand blowing against their tent. She swung over on her chair and opened the attached file. Eventually the carbon-14-analysis data had arrived.
Her eyes wide, she stared at it. That was what they were missing, some of the artifacts were far older than the rest of the cave they had uncovered. But more importantly, some of the stones embedded in the floor were too.
The older, establishes archeologists had laughed at the woman only in her second year of studying when she prepared the samples. But she shook it of that day, remembered the words of her Professor on why she, on of the worst students was picked.
“You may not know languages and dates like the others, but you are the only one of my students that understands methodology and want to look behind the curtain. You want to do archeology, and not just some history class with camping trips.”
And now her wanting to make him proud had paid off. Rovena rushed over to the digsite, where the other still packed some artifacts for shipping.
“I found something.” She shouted and shook the sand out of her hair.
They all gathered, confused looks on their faces but as soon as she started explaining it changed. All the sudden the stones covering the ground were highly interesting again and the archeologists started to remove sand and dust from them once again.
It took them several hours of discussions, research and thinking until they had figured it out. By the time the wind outside had risen to a small storm but none of the scientists realized that. Unpacking them from the transport crates once more, the ancient artifacts were placed on the floor.
Then the unimaginable happened. Just when the last small statue was places correctly the floor stared to glow in a dark green and started to tremble. In surprise and a touch of panic the men and women jumped back to the edges of the cave.
A few seconds later the light was gone and the stones had formed into a staircase. There was something in the air, something ancient, whispering at them barely audible words and chilled even the most experienced of the archeologists. They looked at each other and nodded. It just had to be the wind, the air, right?
“Let’s see what we got there.” the deep voice of the oldest of them broke the silent and made them all twitch. Some chuckles away their fear and others just overcame it and followed. Rovena belonged to the later group and was among the last to reluctantly enter the room.
“Do you have that on tape?” She whispered to the man next to her and he only nodded, to busy staring at what they were able to spot in the faint light of their lamps. The cavern was not big but there was a small, pitch black lake. The whispers seemed to come from that direction.
All in the young German screamed no, when someone keeled down to take a closer look. Those whispers …. it was not possible that it was the wind … not with this geometry of the room. The shiver that ran down her spine, the panic stunned her, closed her throat.
“Is this oil?” The kneeling woman asked and reached out. The biggest mistake of her life. The substance reached for the woman as well and when they meet slipped past her skin and into her body. She turned with a dark stare and black veins on her face.
The earth trembled and something formed in the back of the caver, something big, something black, something purely evil. Rovena ran, ran to the exit. She heard screams from below. Then something hit her head and she blacked out.
She had a strange dream, of bees, wasps and … filth. Visions of the past, the present and the future.
The raven hair blinked when she felt a leather glove on her cheek. There were three men and two women around her, wearing strange uniforms in red, white and black. All of them with a distinct cross.
“You are safe now, Ms. Treublatt.” One of them spoke but Rovena spotted how the others opened the passage down up again. “No, we are not” she whispered.
