If you are new, you should focus on solo gear first, and tanking gear second. And in the beginning, you should not worry too much about what you slap on. Your skills are more important. You will always have to have at least gear sets (some items may be in both) as well as at least 2 decks 8set of skills on your hotbars). A tank wants block and hit first and foremost, then penetration. Don’t worry about signets until you have custom gear.
Become a subscriber, pop a AP boost and do nightmare areas or scenarios. Some missions in Transylvania is also rather quick and gives good XP. (But never do a mission above hard, it will gimp your XP reward severly).
AEGIS is a mechanic in Kaidan (latest zone) with shields. Nothing to worry about if you’re new.
