Captain America: The Winter Soldier debuted stateside on Friday and box office sales were phenomenal. Friday’s sales alone reached $37 million and by the end of the weekend, total sales had amassed to an estimated $96.2 million, making the film the largest ever April debut. Even more amazing is the fact that these sales beat out the first Captain America film by about 50%…quite a feat for a sequel, but not completely unexpected considering every Marvel sequel has outperformed its predecessor. One can only attribute this phenomenon to the ubiquity of the Marvel universe in the media these days. Even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a Winter Soldier tie-in episode planned for this coming Tuesday.
As well as dominating domestically, Winter Soldier has done exceptionally well internationally, having made over $100 million in the non-US market. Total global sales for the film have reached over $300 million.
Following this record-breaking premiere, Marvel has announced today that the new Captain America movie is slated to be released on May 6th, 2016. Before the untitled “Captain America 3” hits theaters, though, fans can next see Cap when he joins the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes once more in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on May 1, 2015!
