In an announcement made on StarWars.com it was revealed that Lucas Film and Disney have begun development on a series of stand-alone Star Wars movies that will be offering new story lines beyond the core Saga.
Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla, will be directing the first stand-alone Star Wars movie, with British writer Gary Whitta writing the screenplay. Gary Whitta’s previous credits include writing a screenplay for After Eden and The Book of Eli. Edwards has been a long time fan of the Star Wars franchise.
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm” – Gareth Edwards
There is no information yet about the subject matter of the new movie, but it has been rumoured that the new spin-offs might focus on characters like bounty hunter Boba Fett and Yoda. Disney has said it intends to produce several of these Star Wars movies and release the movies and spin-offs every year, starting with next year’s “Star Wars: Episode VII” that J. J. Abrams is currently directing.
The first stand-alone movie is scheduled to be out on December 16, 2016.
