Writer/actress Lena Dunham has just signed on to write a four-part story arc for Archie Comics. Expected to be published in 2015, the arc will follow the Riverdale gang while a reality TV show is filmed in their town. Dunham, who has been a fan of Archie Comics since childhood, expressed her excitement, saying that getting to “play with these beloved characters is a wild opportunity.”
Archie Comics, which has already branched out with such series as “Archie Marries Veronica” and “Archie Marries Betty” as well as introducing their first openly gay character, Kevin Keller, expects to have more changes in the future now that they’ve hired their first Chief Creative Officer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Bringing Dunham on board was one of Aguirre-Sacasa’s first moves as CCO, calling her a “stunning” fit for the brand.
Dunham, who created, stars in, and writes for the show Girls on HBO, has received criticism for pushing the envelope with the types of storylines the show portrays. However, Dunham, who calls herself a rabid feminist, defends these stories and calls such criticism misogyny. While it’s expected that the teens of Riverdale won’t get themselves into the same sexually charged situations as the characters in Girls, one has to wonder how far the comic’s boundaries will be tested by a writer used to pushing the limits.
