Star Trek: Into Darkness Blu-Ray DVD specials galore

If you haven’t been living on Ceti Alpha 5 for the last few decades then you are probably aware that the Sequel to the reboot of the classic franchise Star Trek is becoming available to the public via Blu-Ray Special edition in a few days. You may have even been looking forward to it, being that the 2009 Star Trek 3 Disc set included literally hours of special content, behind the scenes footage and making-of’s with director’s & cast commentary. All in all, a great deal.

But just in case you haven’t heard about Star Trek Into Darkness’ special content….let me put a bug in your ear.

badrobotBad Robot has maintained complete control over all Special Features to be added to the movies, and although there is still literally hours of content (including director’s commentary and behind the scenes looks filmed with RED cameras) guess what uncle J.J. has decided to do with it all? Split it up into separate packages and make each one exclusive to different retailers! That’s right folks, and right here on Holosuite Media, we can help you get your Content Collection List in order. Lets start with the litany of lascivious and larcenous lots that Mr. Abrams feels we should buy.

Lets begin with Feature length Director’s Commentary–Only on iTunes Download. Luckily though it’s only 5 GB’s worth of Download…What!?!? You ask? Oh yeah, the 5GB download is for the IMAX version of the film which can only be seen if you purchase (yes that’s right…not iTunes…wait for it…) the German Edition 3D /Blu-Ray Combo Pack…. Nice huh?

Well, Best Buy will have a more complete edition you say…surely the big box megastore/online retailer would not split up it’s offerings? But…Oh myyyyy (say in your best Takei voice)…They have 2 editions in house. One physical that contains an additional 30 minutes of special features that delve into the creation of the film’s unique alien creatures, gives a first-hand look at one of the locations used for the U.S.S. Enterprise’s Engine Room and more. Then there is the CinemaNow (Best Buys’ streaming purchase service which to date has only received lukewarm reviews). But it IS offering an hour of VAM footage to all US citizen viewers for free at the moment. I expect this will be shut off soon, but we’ll see. And for you Canadians out there…all 30 VAM minutes are included in the Canuck version of the Best Buy deal on CinemaNow that are included in the Best Buy Disc set.

More confused than a Klingon on a Pokemon tournament? Wait, there’s more…

The Target Collector’s Set also has 30 minutes of behind the scenes footage…but completely different content. Yes that’s right, same amount of time but completely different shots and specials.

So far we have spent in excess of 130.00 USD and we have gotten only ½ of what was offered as an included price in the first film’s release. Not to mention we have 2 extra Blu-Rays and a clogged 5GB download still queued up for commentary.  But what, Captain? There’s more…..dear God, it’s the Kobayashi Maru all over again… What about the gift editions like the Wal-Mart Steel Box edition with Vengance model? No special edition extra’s not included in the Standard edition you say? Cry Havoc!! …and let loose the dogs of war!! (it sounds better in its original Klingon…)

Maybe if I buy the Amazon Phaser Limited edition set it will have something I am looking for? Nothing at all having to do with special features, but hey I do get the Digital Download of the Star Trek into Darkness comic – if I have a Kindle and only a Kindle by the way.

Well at least the Standard Edition comes with 40 minutes of Extra footage. But if you’re a collector, or a die-hard Trekkie, I would say the purchase of the many outweighs the purchase of the few…definitely the one.

So here it is folks, all the different outlets that offer the same movie with different bonus features. Clicking on them will take you to all the editions of Star Trek: Into Darkness available at their website. Which one would you consider buying? Would you and will buy more than one? Post your comments below and let us now your thoughts.

So how do you think the crew of the Star Trek: The Next Generation reacted to all of this Blu Ray non-sense?
